The Dryden Central School District Solar Express traveling library rolled into its 20th year in 2026, bringing books and meals to Dryden, Freeville, and McLean communities throughout the summer months.

The summer reading program has become a beloved tradition in the last 20 years, allowing Dryden students, families, community members, and even visitors to the area to share the joy of reading, community, and connection.

This year marked a meaningful milestone for the Solar Express, and allowed for reflection on how much the program has grown throughout the years. Dryden Director of Curriculum and Instruction Cheryl Covell says, “What I love most is the tradition of the program. The ability to meet students directly in the community and to make reading fun for them is so powerful. The teachers who run the program also bring so much positive energy that keeps the students coming back.” In 2024, in partnership with Dryden Central School District Food Service, the program was able to expand to offering meals to visitors 18 and under. The addition of meals has made a tremendous impact on the program: “More than anything, I love collaborating with the amazing teachers who operate Solar Express— turning every delivery into an opportunity to check in with our students and stay connected with the families we serve.  Thank you to everyone who made this summer’s routes such a success!” says Megan Munson, Dryden Director of Food Service. 

In its 2026 season, the Dryden Solar Express saw 761 visitors, and served 1,839 meals. The District is incredibly grateful for the support of the staff members, community partners, and district administrators who have helped build and shape this program throughout the years. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for The Solar Express!
